Arrrrggggh. I now have electric heat. My bill went up $180 since I turned the heat on. I just turned the heat off and bought a portable heater to try to save money. I never thought I would have to do that, but the amount they want is obsurd. People in my neighborhood say the bill runs the same for them, so they just turn the heat off. I am a college student, and $240 is a lot to cough up for electric. I don't have drafty windows or anything. Will the portable heater save on my electricity, or am I fighting a loosing battle here? Any suggestions? Man, utility companies are the most professional and legal crooks I have ever seen!

I do turn my lights out. I am a candle freak! They really overcharge us for things like electricity in PA. Even if you are put on a payment plan, you are still responsible for the whole amount. So while you pay $50 towards your bill, you still owe the whole balance at some point-some energy assistance! Besides, you have to make less than $12,000 a year to qualify! I may be in college, but I make a little more than that!

change all your light bulbs to the new energy bulbs
install a programmable thermostat
it will stay lower at night and while you are away turn itself up when you are ready to turn up you can set it
buy a humidifier- moister air holds heat in the air better
buy the plastic covers for heat vents so the air is diverted to where you want it

I unplug most of my unneeded items that are plugged just sitting there ready to recharge my phone, a hand held vac, the perfume thing that plugs in to make the house smell good get unplugged when I leave for the day
its a waste of electricity trickle

A portable heater is generally the best way to heat a general area if you tend to just stay in that area most of the time. You should see a difference in energy bill next time around.

The only way that a portable heater will save on your electric bill is by allowing you to heat only specific parts of the dwelling instead of the whole thing. But it may be of use for that purpose.

If there is no way to stop cold air from coming in and it is snug then there isn't anything you can do. Small heaters heat specific areas but I don't think they are as efficient as most furnaces. Try coving your windows with layers, cover air flow around doors, throw a tapestry or two on the outside castle walls and pray for sunny days.

If you can put a timer on the hot water heater that might help, if you own the property. If you can't do that, put an insulating jacket over the hot water heater.. I would also buy a Kerosene portable heater, they work great, make sure to vent it with a window slightly open. Protect yourself against Carbon Monoxide.

wanna shop some money & time purchase one hundred thirty V lightbulbs through fact the avg voltage is around one hundred twenty volts, employing one hundred thirty V bulbs skill that the lightbulb is purely at approximately ninety one% of it extremely is rated skill, and hence will final longer than an 120V bulb working at one hundred% (in case you quite wanna make a lightbulb final for years, get double the wattage necessary, and positioned a diode in sequence with the lightbulb - IOW, in case you like one hundred watts, get a 2 hundred watt bulb, get a three amp 3 hundred V silicon diode, and positioned the diode on the sunshine change, this is how - take between the wires off of the change, positioned the diode on the change the place the twine grew to become into, now use a twine nut to connect the different end of the diode to the got rid of twine - achieved now you have a one hundred watt output through fact the diode cuts the voltage in 0.5 - and a bulb working at 50% will final for years *__* )
