the american dream, as described in most literature (for example The Great Gatsby) is to live in a big nice house in the suburbs with a big front lawn, fancy clothing, a white picket fence, and 2.5 children.
obviously this is not every american's dream, but this is what most people mean when they use the phrase.

It is the curious phenomenon that makes poor people believe that everybody can get rich by working hard.
What happens in reality is that in the US there is hardly any social mobility and the poor get poorer.

It seems to be a fallacious beleif that any poor man can become massively rich if he just works hard enough.
Ergo if you are poor and not becoming rich it "must" be because you are stupid, lazy, drunk, immoral etc etc.
Just a way for the rich to justify their behaviour and to keep the poor in control. Thank God I don't live in America.

To own one's own home, have food on the table, heat, etc. Atleast that's what it used to mean. Now it's rampant consumerism, disposible commodities, jobs, families, etc....and not keeping up with the Jones, but, rather, besting them. I think the old adage is still the best, "He who dies with the most toys...is still dead."
