Last month I was sick w/ab pain. I had a walk-in app w/a doc in internal med @ a local clinic. They continuously asked me if I was pregnant/tested. I told the nurses and doc no- that I was not sexually active. (I had been raped six yrs ago but that was it.) I don't even date! He did an examm gave me some meds and now I'm better. He then told me to go to a gyn @ the clinic to get an annual women's exam. I did. I answered the same q's as before. Then, she did a pelvic exam, but afterwards when I looked @ the sheet that lists everything done given to me when I left. Preg test was checked off. Why is this? Is it mandatoy? Did she not believe me? I concerned and confused.

Thanks so much for reading this and answering!!!

Because some people lie, and some are crazy, and some are stupid and don't know how pregnancy happens. She has to cover her bases.

My gyn explained this to me once because she did the test when I told her I wasn't sexually active. She said they just do all the tests (preg, standard, STD) no matter what the patient says. It isn't because they didn't believe you, they just check anyways.

I had a very similar experience where I went into the emergency room with severe abdominal pain and they asked me a million and a half times (and a million and a half different ways) if I was pregnant. I knew the nurse I was talking to, she was a family friend and she believed me but they still did the pregnancy test because they just do it. It really isn't something to worry about, just procedure for them.

A gyn cannot perscribe to you birth control unless they give you a pregnancy test. I believe it is a standard test they give (if you are there to receive birth control). They do this b/c if you didnt know you were pregnant and they gave you birth control, which then harmed the baby in utero... they could be held responsible.

However, if you were just there for a check up and nothing else and then they were trying to charge you for the test they gave w/o your permission and for no reason, then I would be angered and consider fighting that charge.

You were complaining of abdominal pain, which may be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy (which can be fatal) While all doctors want to believe their patients, but "making sure" was just good medicine on their parts (unfortunately some patients will lie to their doctors). Additionally, the medicine he gave you might have been harmful to a baby if you were pregnant - another good reason to rule out pregnancy.

Um, GYN's can tell by the internal exam whether someone is pregnant or not. The lining of the uterus is different and there are aspects that they know when they are in there. That is one way they confirm a pregnancy. So that is probably all she checked off...just like the fact that both of your ovaries are there. You did not ask her to check that either :)

Doctors give all girls a pregnancy test. Some patients lie, so to make sure they don't do anything that would harm the baby or the patient, they test everyone.

seems strange because i could see it if the test was done prior to prescribing medication. however, since they gave you the meds first, then i would talk to the doctor. it is your body and you have the right to consent to every test. if they can't trust you then you can't trust them
