I have a 4 cylinder 1999 Hyundai Sonata, everytime I fill up with gas I have to press the gas and wait till the gas level goes up then it stays on fine the rest of the time, it has also done it a couple of times while running where it wants to stall and even if I press the gas it feels like it's resisting, if it keeps doing it I have pulled over and pressed on the gas for a minute or two while in parking and it goes away after that, what is wrong with my car?

my battery is new and I haven't had any problems with the transmission. In the cold weather the stalling while driving has completely stopped but in the summer it starts to doing it all over again.

There a some good Ideas above except for vapor lock. Since fuel injection came in and the fuel pump was moved to the tank, vapor lock it a thing of the past. Caps must be tight to pressurize the tank and to meet EPA specs.

One thing not mention that can cause this is the carbon canister may no longer be working. But go with the new gas cap first. This is also one of the primary reason the check engine light come on.

difficulty starting? pressing on the gas feels like it is resisting? does the car seem to get slower and slower and you have to push the accelerator farther and farther to make it go? you may think i am crazy but have a mechanic check your exhaust system for carbon build-up. it can restrict the flow of exhaust gases and eventually restrict it so the back pressure is to great for the engine to overcome. sluggish and hard to start?

May need a new gas cap, many cars now require that they are able to build presure in the tank in order to run correctly.

Are you in a cold climate?
Sounds like you have gotten water in your fuel.
Change the gas filter and put a couple gas line antifreeze into the fuel.
This should clean it up.
