I just got a 55 gallon tank, and it came with a whisper 60 filter and a whisper heater. Now, I've had bad luck with whisper stuff before, so I was thinking of replacing both filter and heater with other brands. Any suggestions?

I'm going to have a sponge filter as well, which is currently running in a big plastic tub full of water in my basement that I'm doing a fishless cycle in, lol.

I recommend AquaClear filters. The sponge media gives you a lot of surface area (and they last forever), and they have a new ceramic media (Biomax) that you can put on the top to increase the surface area even more. I have had a few of these for decades and they still work well. The only thing with these is they have an "odd" flow adjustment where you have to turn the entire uptake tube to the side.

If amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is an issue for whatever species you keep, look at the Millenium line by Aquarium Systems: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/198130/product.web These have a built-in Venturi to increase dissolved oxygen. The one drawback I found with these is that the uptake tube is a little flimsy and can crack pretty easily. These use a standard carbon cartridge, but I replace then with biobags (one of the best products Whisper makes).
