Layman's Terms

People usually ask to have something explained "in layman's terms" when a technical explanation is originally given. For instance, a doctor might use medical terms when explaining a diagnosis. If the patient does not understand those medical terms, he or she would ask the doctor to explain "in layman's terms," or in such a way that a non-medical professional would understand.

To put something in layman's terms is to explain something that someone unfamiliar with the topic being discussed would understand.

You'd typically use it to explain some techincal field to someone who is not in that field.

If you were explaining something to a fellow expert, you would probably use lots of specific details and technical jargon. To explain it to a layman, you would simplify the whole thing and use basic words, perhaps even analogies, to make your point clear.

A "layman" is someone who is not an expert in a certain field. For instance, I recently had laparoscopic surgery to remove my gall bladder, and since I am not an expert in that field of medicine, my doctor had to explain things to me in words/phrases I could understand, aka "layman's terms."

"In layman's terms" means using language that an ordinary person with no expertise in that subject area would understand. An answer in layman's terms would not have any technical jargon or overly complicated explanations.

A layman is someone who is not a member of a given profession, such as law or medicine. For a doctor to explain something "in layman's terms" means to explain it so that someone who is not a doctor can understand it.
