If I may just speak for myself:
1. I'm largely idle in the winter. The wife and I are fine together but each gets bored. Here, there are lots of fun people with varied tastes, but I single out the humorous ones.
2. I feel this a stimulus for my imagination, and I like to share knowledge OR, mostly HUMOR with others. make them cheerier.
3. I don't drink anymore, so this is better than "socializing" at a bar.
$ It IS very inexpensive entertainment, and FAR better than TV. If I don't like what's on the menu, something else is bound to come along in a few seconds that I WILL like... just like this Q.

I'm like "Habanera" -- just wasting company time (not really. I get all my work done 1st, & right now I'm not even on the clock.) As a live-in employee, I have my own TV/VCR combo w/ a DVD player in a private area. (I'm spoiled!) I've watched my library of movies so much that now I just use them to put myself to sleep. Between the earplugs & the headphones, I can block out most of the noise from the shelter residents. Once I'm asleep, a thunderstorm couldn't wake me! When I'm awake & not working, this is where I can be found.

I'm a lecturer, and my wife works varying shifts as a nurse, so I have a lot of time to kill when she's gone and I'm home, especially when the weather is too lousy to do anything else but sit here and warm the couch. Keeps my brain engaged in something approaching "useful".

Me, I am a homebody, especially in the winter, once the temp dips under 50 I hibernate. Brrrr....
In real life, I am a people watcher, so YA is like people watching - cyber style.

2nd shift factory worker, so not much time
