It is a cavalry USB 2.0 + SATA hard drive. I have it powered up and connected to my computer through the USB 2.0. I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop. I do not believe there are any external SATA ports.

The hard drive is supposed to be plug n play but my USB does not recognize it. Nothing happens since I have it plugged in. Do I need to have the hard drive plugged into a SATA port and a USB port? So then I would have to buy a external SATA port for my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've never heard of an external SATA port. Try plugging the hard drive into a friend's computer (Windows XP, at least). If that doesn't work, you probably have a dud on your hands. Keep the receipt.

Oh yeah, one other thing: make sure you have a hard drive and not just a hard drive enclosure. It just seems odd that they'd be advertising that a USB external hard drive uses SATA. Good night!

A new hard drive is not formatted and ready to run. This cannot be done via USB. You are going to have to connect it internally and format it. Once formatted it should then be seen via the USB connection.
