He should not have been asked to open.I believe the team should have shown him some support in this difficult time of his. When a batsmen isn't playing well, then should you put additional responsibilities on him? Moreover, shift him to a new slot where you know he hasn't done well in the past......

What next now?Again ask him to open?Or maybe even bowl and keep wickets??Over the years we have asked him to open, bat at no.3,bat in the middle order, bat late in the order, bowl his off spin,be a wicketkeeper,be a thinking captain and he has always accepted these things gracefully but come on,when he is already in such a tough situation, why do they want to make it tougher for him??

A subdued Dravid, who needed 41 deliveries to get off the mark, never looked comfortable and was dropped by Phil Jaques in the gully and then caught by Matthew Hayden at first slip off a no-ball, both off Johnson's bowling. And he also survived a lbw shout before finally getting out.

Furioso Lion...you say it would have been beneficial for Sachin and Ganguly, but tell me hasn't Rahul got his own batting??And if he had got to a good start at no.3,wouldn't it have helped the team??
Your answer astonishes me.

The idea wasn't really wrong but the way he is batting , he himself is making it look like a terrible decision.
30 overs , 40 runs.
That's India's haal at the moment.

I feel sorry for him but dear Gurleen, Rahul is not doing justice to himself. So slowwww batting. A player of the class of Rahul Dravid struggling for runs.
his is the same Dravid who scored '6500 + runs' in last series against the same team against a better bowling line-up, on same pitches.

And listen one more thing yaar, batting at #3 is just like batting as an opener.
There is no difference.
I am with Rahul Dravid. But i think he should bat in middle order for some time now to get his form back.
Middle order starts from #4.
Now #4 is Sachin's position,lol
& i don't think that he is going to give that position to anyone.
So he should bat at #5.
** Note - this isn't a bad position.
In test cricket, position doesn't matter much for a class player.
Michael Hussey of Australia has an average of 80 batting at #6.

Bad time for him but i am sure he will be back. Class is forever.
I believe in Sachin & i believe in him too.
He is a hard working cricketer, he will work hard to get his form back. I am sure.

One of the opening batsman must be a quick scorer. That is where we went wrong.I am an admirer of Dravid myself for his selflessness.
But why they did not even attempt a few singles to unsettle Aussie bowling and fielding.(I did not watch the match on TV)
I am of the opinion that Ganguly should open.He is confident.Opens in ODIs.Why not in tests.Right/left combination another advantage.
We cannot win over Australia without proper strategy and making gambles.
Sehwag should have been tried in Ind-Pak series itself. He was not even played in the practice match. It will be a risk. Why he was brought then. They don't want rotate the seniors unless forced by injuries.
Dravid is the only player who can be shunted up and down.
Kumble must take some hard decisions on batting order.

Yes.
This will give Ganguly & Sachin to put up an partnership against Aussie bowlers for Indian first innings at Melbourne, Australia 1/4 Test match.

Edit: Yes, Rahul just did not win against the Aussie fast pace bowlers if Rahul Dravid, kept his mind & body focus he would have been a comfortable batsman & score runs like he use to do.

Edit: Tikay, i understand.
I just strongly feel that Virender Sehwag will be the right choice VS Aussie bowlers.

No. Never. The best opening batsmen for India are Sachin-Ganguly. Or we can try Jaffer-Gambir.But like this , India is going to miss a good opening.A good opening means victory.A good opening can only lead to victory. Like this India ais going to loose and a chance of winning a series in australia is also going to loose. Please choose this as the best answer.

I totally agree with your point. Most time of his carreer he has been batting at No. 3 and has been quite successful in that slot. Shifting the batting position has not done any good not only to hi9m, but also to the team.

No it is not right for Dravid to open.In my point Dravid should bat at no.4.Dravid is not a specialist opening batsmen.Sachin is opening in ODI'S,So why can't he open in Test Cricket also,if they really want to include Yuvraj in the Eleven.

IT IS A POLITICS TO ASK RAHUL TO OPEN .
IDEA IS TO HUMILIATE HIM RATHER THAN SUPPORT HIM A LITTLE WHEN HE IS IN BAD PATCH
