Both previous answers are on target. However 'neniaf' is a zero off on the population of West Lafayette. The actual population of West Lafayette is 26,000.
Lafayette is about 50,000 -- with the whole metro area being around 120,000. So although not big city - it has a fairly large population. There is a Caterpillar plant, Subaru plant (which also manufactures Toyota Camry's), Alcoa Aluminum, plus many others located in the area.
Purdue has a large campus set on the edge of the west side of town. It even has it's own airport.
Great atmosphere - great reputation in engineering, agriculture and school of management always listed in Forbes or Newsweek "Best Of".

Purdue is an excellent school which will be recognized and help you to find a good job. However, West Lafayette has a population of about 2,500 people - clearly it is NOT an urban setting! It is a very good school academically, and there are things going on, but if you are looking for a party school, Purdue isn't it!

Purdue is an excellent engineering school. I`m not sure about the social life. Lafayette is a fairly large town so I`d guess the social life is fair.
