I think it is. I have heard stories about tigers in India. People in India have seen Tigers leap over 6ft fences with a 1,000 lb cow in its mouth! Of course many know it alls are saying thats impossible. Just like they are saying it is impossible for a Siberian Tiger to clear a 20 ft wall at a zoo. That is what I think happened. Nobody is gonna let a tiger out knowing that they themselves can easily be killed. These animals have killed Grizzly Bears, 29 ft Reticulated Pythons, Crocodiles, and even elephants! Many tests that are done on animals, such as bite force, leaping ability or what not, are done when the animal isn't giving a 100% of what it is able to. The Tiger is second to the cougar (supposedly) in leaping ability. The Cougar can leap the lenght and height of a school bus. But these experiments have flaws I think. The people in India have contradicted alot of what biologists say. This Tiger got out because it leaped out! Nobody is stupid enough to let a mean Tiger out!

It would be suicide to release the animal sense it already had a bad reputation to start with! This animal must have had bad experiences with humans in the past.

I heard the story but didn't read the particulars. As a zoo fan and with a unreasonable fear of big cats, that is scary. I used to go to the St. Louis Zoo all the time when I lived there and loved it. But one time they had a leopard or one of the skinnier spotted cats in a makeshift small wire enclosure with no top-this was way before Big Cat Country and it had been set up so that you could really get close to the cat. The cat was way spooked and I know cats can climb and I left the zoo and didn't go back until that was gone. And I did ask the person I was with what they thought, and they agreed that they thought if the cat really wanted out, it could get out. Cats are so clever and we don't give animals enough due. When they want out, they can do incredible things Manx cats are known to be smart enough to open door knobs so imagine what a very intent tiger can pull off. I guess I will have to read up on the particulars but what a horrible way to die. My condolences to the family. . .
And I don't think you have to provoke a cat, They have their own sense of being. Check out the attitude on a house cat. And tigers are used to being at the top of the food chain so expecting to dominate them is risky business. . .

All animals, even us, have super strenth when provoked.Tigers are not much different than a house cat. Just watch a house cat and see how far they can leap. The tiger that was at the San Francisco zoo was not a mean tiger. She was a syberian tiger, which are normally more aggresive than other tigers.
