I am planning a 40th birthday party for my sister in Feburary.
I was thinking of a Friday night or a Saturday daytime.
With family and children. My question is: What is a modern way to celebrate is it still all black with 40s gifts or has it changed?

I think it's nice that you want to plan a party for your sister. That shows that you love her! If you love her, you want her to feel good, right? Then don't do the black theme. It's been done and it's mean. I will be 40 in 9 months and if I had to attend a party where all the decorations were black and the gifts were gag gifts, I'd cry. Why don't you rent a limo and drive around to fun clubs or a great restaurant or something? You won't be able to invite as many people, but I bet she would love it! I know I would. If you have to have a 'real' party, do a fun theme, like Vegas or the tropics. A lot of people have trouble with turning 40 (I hope I'm not one of them!) and the all-black thing might be a real downer. Don't do that to someone you love.

How does she feel about this milestone? Does she have a good sense of humor? Some people, men and women, see this as a scary age. Others feel it is nothing more than another full decade achieved. And yes, I said achieved.

Personally, I saw my 40th with a lot of contentment. I was sure of who I was, and I even got carded at dinner when I ordered a festive drink. My friends at work decorated my office in black and silver. It was done in fun and friendship, and I was not annoyed. Personally, with life expectancies in the 80's and 90's now, I didn't see a big deal.

We did this again the next year when a manager turned 40. He was not amused and did not have as much fun as we all expected. My point is, it depends on the person. If she is fine with her age and her place in the world, go for it. If you are not sure, go the safe route, or talk to her about how she feels before deciding the theme of the party.

As an alternative suggestion, I gave a party for a friend of mine who loved Barbies as a kid. It was a costume party, and we all dressed up as different Barbie/Ken dolls. The man I was seeing at the time went as the Ken doll that you could shave. He grew a beard for a week before the party, and half way through, went into my bathroom to shave. The party was a huge hit, and she loved it. You know your sister well enough to remind her of what she loved best when you were both growing up!

Have a great party!!!

You should ask her what theme she wants. Honestly, she's only 40, you're treating her like she's 60. Black for a birthday?
Just ask her opinion, and ask other siblings what you think she'd like. Ask her friends, and go to the mall with her and see what she likes. There's no modern way anymore - everybody's so different.

try black and pink because 40 isn't as old as it use to be
