Depends on the year.
Some are sports cars, some are considered luxury coupes, most of the T-Bird clone ones are considered 2dr luxury sedans since they have a B pillar.
However if youre looking at a 4dr or wagon variation theyre entirely different.
The New Edge 1999-2002 is a sports car, but insurance is still usually low since their resale value is so low.
__
The insurance company I used to work for classified the Cav as a small sedan or coupe unless it was the Z24, after the Z24 it was discontinued they listed all Cav coupes as sports cars.

Its the same vehicle as the Ford Thunderbird, which is considered a Sports Car. Chevy Cavalier's are pieces of crap, and GM's replacement the Cobalt is just as bad if not worse.
Insurance will go up due to the larger engine, but not too much. Just don't get a mustang.

You can always call your insurance company and let them know you are thinking of buying a Cougar and ask for a quote for it. I believe they are considered a sports car - I had one & loved it - just dont plan on the back seat passengers being very comfortable. The back seats are awful.
