I guess I would need a bit more information about when and why and how often these tests would happen before I could offer an educated opinion.

From the broadest perspective, public schools desperately need to stay focused on delivering an education to kids, period, rather than seeking newer and better ways to get them in trouble. Schools nowadays will suspend kids on a whim, crippling their self-esteem and convincing them that they may never amount to anything, and then the behavioral problems are magnified.

As someone who supports the legalization of marijuana, I believe some of our problems regarding drugs are that we ruminate on how to punish people rather than helping them get past the drugs and get through life adequately. On a long enough timeline, we're creating our own problems by being so authoritarian.

I disagree. I don't think it is the schools responsibility to monitor kids for drugs. I think that should be left up to the parents and the Police Department. If a student is suspected of being under the influence they should be referred to Police Dept and a parent. If there is no suspicion of a student being under the influence of drugs they shouldn't have to right to just randomly test. I think this is a privacy violation. The only reason it is done on people's jobs is because when they accept the job they have to sign something giving them that right. No one can randomly test you in any other public place or place of business. Just like no one can search you without your permission, I don't think they should be able to test you without your permission.

If its illegal then there really should be no question about it the easiest thing would be to have parents and kids sign papers agreeing to it or not letting them enroll.
