My permanent address is in NJ, but I'm currently living in the RI for college. I graduate in Feb 2008. Once I graduate I could be living in either NJ, RI, or MA. Which state should I be registering in? I'm assuming I can only vote in the state I'm registered for...right?

I really want to be able to vote for the upcoming presidency. Should I wait till I'm graduated and hopefully know where I'll be working/staying?

Oh and I was briefly reading the NJ voting registration...it talked about having to have actually been living in the state for the past X days. Well, does that mean I'm not able to since I'm away at college? Technically at home right now for holidays, but you get my drift.

-I've never heard of this, what's it called and/or where would I look for information on it?

Anyways, I'm going to go look further into registering in NJ, my current permanent address. Thanks again.

Congratulations for taking an interest in government.

If you are a student, the address you listed as your home when you registered for school should be the one you use for voting. That is probably your parent's address. If that is in New Jersey and you will not actually be there on election day, you can apply for an absentee ballot.

It is a good idea to register as soon as possible so you will be qualified to vote in the next election. Remember to vote not only for federal offices, but for state and local ones, too. Elected officials at all levels have the power to affect your life and spend you money. You have a right to use your vote to insure that the best people are elected.

You have to vote in the state and county where your present permanent address is. Just be there when you vote. It takes no time to register in your new state/town whenever you move. If you miss a deadline for registering before an election you could always vote in your last district by absentee ballot.

List your parents' home address as your address and register in that state. (This may enable you to vote absentee or early, depending on when early and absentee voting begins.)

If you know what state you'll be living in after you graduate and before you vote (is this for the general election?), check out the registration requirements for that state, then follow them to the last letter and period.

You can only vote in the state in which you are registered. You can only register in the state in which you claim residency. This state is found on your driver's license.
