without taking expensive college courses? Are there any good books on these topics out there?

Of course there are books out there . . . where do you think people in college get their information? You should take courses somewhere unless you're trying to satisfy your own curiosity, since you'd have to practically become world-renown before anyone would hire you without a certification of some sort. You usually don't learn about repair and programming simultaneously though . . . that's kind of unusual and probably unnecessary. Computer repair is cheaper to learn about than computer programming . . . you can get a two-year degree from a community college and be qualified to do that. Computer programming usually requires a four-year degree in computer science. Good luck!

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot to mention . . . I don't think it's a good idea to seek out online courses in anything. I don't know how many of those institutions are accredited or anything, and besides it's a good experience to go to school for something.
