In 1947 at age seven in northeast Arkansas I picked cotton. That was the first of a long line of jobs I am now 67 and financially secure with 18 published novels.

The first real job though was working in catalog sales in the mid 60's at age 12, believe it or not! The boss was also my dad's boss. It was in a small town of 3,000 people. Sears and the electrical company were in the same store! (Dad was an electrician) I got a dollar an hour and I worked after school until 6 P.M. and I worked all day Sat. I worked with the boss's daughter. It was quite a raise from babysitting where I made .25 an hour! lol
When I was in high school I also worked for my car. It was a medium metallic blue 1968 Mercury Montego MX with power windows and power seats. Just awesome! My dad helped me get a car loan and it was $700. I had it paid off when I was in high school and totaled it when I was 21. Damn I missed that car!

I was a busboy in 1977. It was a well established place for wealthy people and all of the busboys were stoned. It was kind of normal back then. We would go to the boiler room and bowl one up before we waited on tables. There was also a closet that always had a 1/4 barrel of beer in it [on tap]. I wish I wouldn't been so stoned though because then I may have had a little better luck with the waitresses. Oh, the good old days.....When Colombian was something good and sex wasn't always on the front burner.

i worked in my school district's administrative office for about 4 months when I was a sophomore. I learned that soooo many people apply to be teachers. When their applications arrived I would date-stamp them and file them in this humongous file cabinet.
I was discouraged, because I wanted to be a teacher and I learned how tough the job market was around my area.

My first real job was cooking @ some crappy restaurant near my school when I was 16. I applied for the busboy position and the owner said he'd teach me to cook. He never did. I lasted 3 months.

It was at a local breakfast diner called "Elmer's" when I was in tenth grade. I was a hostess, sat people and served them their coffee and water. I had to wear a uniform with a blue skirt and hideous button up blouse.
