To commemorate an important phase of American History. We fought a Revolution to attain national independence as a free, egalitarian society; we fought a Civil War to free the slaves and hold the country together; and we took part in the Civil Rights struggle to ensure equal rights for all citizens. Just as we celebrate Washington and Lincoln's birthdays because they were leaders in the first two of these movements, or events, we celebrate Dr. King's birthday because of his leadership role in the third.

You're joking, right?

Sorry, I don't mean to sound sarcastic.

There was a 100 year gap between the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King provided the voice, the spirit, the authority, and most importantly, the answers, for the Black Community to start down the path to equality.
He was without question one of most important figures in American history--if not world history. (I don't think I'm exaggerating here). If anyone deserved the honour it was him. I only wish we celebrated it here in Canada.

Aside from the first responder, who is justified in their response BTW.

MLK's day was set aside to commemorate a man's life dedicated to peace among those who would start a war to maintain the status quo.
I feel that the young black population within the U.S. has done a great dis-service and has mostly forgotten the man.

A sop to the black population. MLK led marches, made speeches and had a dream. There are plenty of other black people to honor than him.
