I don't have any grandchildren, but I did this with my children. This family tradition began with my mom's side of the family who came from Germany. I don't know how long it's been in the family though. Each Saturday night in December (before Christmas) the kids would put out their shoes by the fireplace and if they were good kids that week Santa's elves would come at night and leave a small gift. If the kids were bad they would get a lump of coal in their shoe.. or in my case.. a rock.

The Santa Lucia tradition. The oldest girl wears a wreath with candles on her head and serves our guests cookies. It is also a traditional part of our Holiday pageants. Only one of many but a beautiful one.

Not something done, but something carried forward: the bear hunting story my father told me, that I told my grandson. I later learned it was told on television in the fifties by Will Geer. It goes like this:

When my father was a boy, he went bear hunting with his father. Their cabin was at the bottom of a hill. They settled in, fixed dinner, and went to bed. Next morning after breakfast, his father left to hunt alone. While washing the breakfast dishes, my dad heard him yelling his name, looked up, and out the window saw his father running down the hill with his rifle, a bear in close chase. His father opened the front porch door, stood aside, let the bear in, slammed the door closed, and from the porch, yelled, "You catch this one! I'll go get another one!"

Answering the inevitable, "What did he DO??" :

"He reached down his throat, grabbed him by the tail, turned him inside out, and he tickled himself to death!"

No I didn't have any grandparents. Only had a grandpa that lived 3,000 miles away and only saw him one time when I was 4.
