I know it can be done using a stencil and paint. But i would like to find out how to transfer only the design on iron on transfers. When heat is applied to the transfer paper, won't the whole piece of paper including the white portion be transferred to the T-shirt?
So can i transfer only the design and not the areas that are not printed. e.g the white portion of the transfer paper.

the non printed portion of the transfer will be transparent, not white. it'll leave a slight plastic-ky film but it's not white. you should cut around the outline of your image anyway, but any portions inside your image that are empty will have this plastic film. it's better to use a white or light colored shirt, cause the darker the shirt, the more the plastic will show.

Personally I have had trouble attaching anything to nylon with the expectaion of it staying on for any length of time. Fusibles do not work well because the iron usually scorches the nylon before the fusing takes place, and slick type paints peel off with wear. Thinner paints, more ink-like seem to work better, but they bleed into the fabric. I am afraid that fabric markers do the same. You make be able to find a spray paint type method...but I would practice first. Be wary of any rough texture materials as this will complicate any method you choose. If you want to really try the iron thing, look for fusibles that are thin-like vinyl (like the iron-ons from the 70's-remember the Farrah Fawcett t-shirts?!) because they will probably melt into the weave. Good Luck
