They just don't understand love. Love cannot be put on a scale of more or less. you either do or you don't. If someone said they love 'something' more than 'something else' than they don't really love the 'something else' at all.
My first love said this every time I told him I loved him. And now that I look back I can see that it was a (small, but now relevant) way for him to feel in control of the relationship. This later snowballed into getting more and more controlling.
I will never say it to anyone because it diminishes how they feel about me. I don't want to be loved less than I love them.... that is ridiculous and foolish.
So my answer is yes, they are saying their love can "beat up" your love; which isn't very nice. I mean... who wants their love to be threatened by the person who supposedly love's them too?

Do you mean the love in your heart, or the love in your bed? The love in your heart can get beat up pretty bad and still go on. The love in your bed getting beat up is another thing. Depends on which love is getting hurt.
