Usually you catch a hint when the person CAN'T STOP talking about themselves and their accomplishments. This pretty much sums it up.

A true narcissist is quite egotistical.
A person like this has no regard for other people's feelings, and will often lie and cheat to get what they want.
They show no remorse or guilt for their actions, and they tend to leave a path of destruction wherever they go.
A narcissist is very insecure, although they
seem quite confident.
Narcissistic people usually have a hard time holding onto long term employment, this is due to the fact that they have a hard time getting along with other people.

Google Narcissistic Personality Disorder(NPD). You will get much good information.
Narcissists have low self-esteem that they cover with a false self image. They are constantly searching for validation of this image, which is why they are always bragging or looking for approval. Narcissism can also take the form of the "Nice-Guy" syndrome. Which is another false self-image in which the person sees themselves as nicer or more giving than others. Both the braggart and the nice-guy have a core need to feel special, somehow better or worse than most people. They must always contrast themselves against others. Either they feel especially good or especially bad, but never on the level with others, never a person amongst people. They do this in order to fill the hole of specialness left by their parents, who didn't make them feel special in any effective way when they were children.
The main things that characterize pathalogical narcissism are:
The need to feel special
Fear of intimacy
Fear of abandonment
Tendency to idealize or devalue(people/things are either perfect or worthless)
Grandiose dreams of success or perfect love
Perfectionism and innability to handle setbacks
Innability to see others as separate from themselves(if I feel a certain way about something that means everybody feels that way or sees it that way)
Of course, no one perfectly fits the profile of narcissist and everyone walking the planet does some narcissistic things sometimes. It's just when these behaviors and thoughts dominate one's life is when NPD is diagnosed.
