If you are trying to use a gas fired hot plate, you need the proper orifice for the gas you are using; usually natural gas which is mostly methane; or propane/LPG. If you have the wrong orifice for the type of gas you're using, the gas air mixture will be off and it will cause a yellowish, sooty flame or it will keep going out.
