My hand brake didn't work.I had the flu and dreadful sinusitus. My instructor, poor soul died the week before the test so I missed on on him doing a run thru of the test with me.It had all the makings of a fail and yet I still passed!
Looks like us girlies are just shading it,no suprise there then.

Hi Gyp.:)

Steph:I was utterly scared stiff and knew it was now or never as I would not want to go through the ordeal again.

Kev:I think the week long intensive course is a great idea. You don't have time to pick up sloppy driving habits and are probably less nervous of the test.

Yes, car test and motorcycle test passed first time, car test was totally bizarre ! I was insulted by a crazy old lady, I stopped to let her cross the road at a pedestrian crossing, but she got halfway over and then turned along the centre of the road, walking in the same direction as me, pulling her wicker shopping trolley behind her, looking over her shoulder, swearing and shouting at me in the most disgusting way. I drove slowly behind her for about 20 yards and then leaned out of the window and told her to "xxxx off" before she caused an accident. After the test was over my examiner said "Congratulations Mr.Abuse you have passsed your driving test, is there anything that you think you did wrong ?" I said "Yeah, I should not have sworn at the old lady" He told me he was examining my driving abilities and not my manners, but, she was a stupid old xxx and he would have done the same..he was laughing too !

My bike test was held in a blizzard just before they closed the roads.

I'm quite proud to say I passed mine second time. I'd never driven before but took a week long intensive course with the test at the end and failed mainly because the car I took the test in was a souped-up Peugot 306 turbo that was too responsive. This resulted in me pulling straight out onto oncoming traffic at the start of the test, and I knew I'd failed right away.

The second test was taken in an old Rover that kept cutting out and that actually did me a favour as I kept having to go through the procedure for stalling cars and getting them under control.

I do think the test is harder these days though. My OH has taken hers four times now, but I honestly believe she's a good driver, but they're picking her up on the stupidest things. I actually believe the DVLA are now using it as a revenue raising exercise given that each test now costs £50+ to take which is daft, not to mention costly. I honestly believe they have a quota of people they're going to pass each day and they'll deliberately fail anyone else on the silliest little thing to make sure they have to pay again. It's all messed up!!!!

Yes I did! The First time for Car and First time for Motorcycle! Got 98 on the car and 100 on the motorcycle!!! I took my motorcycle test with a 1100 full dressed Yamaha! But that was over 30 some years ago! I have never had a speeding ticket or accident!!! With a Car or Motorcycle!!!

I was always going to get my License to be a bus driver! But Now that I'm older and really don't feel comfortable with ton's of screaming kids! I guess I won't bother to get one now!!!

Yes.

But a quick story. After successfully parallel parking I must have been feeling pretty confident. (This was back in the Winter of 1987-88 so my memory may have embellished the event.) I was almost done with the test - the instructor told me to pull away from the curb, go down to the traffic light, turn left, turn right and turn right again to finish the same place we started. It was a two way street with cars parked only on the one side - but it was not a wide street - there was basically only room for three cars. Now I know, most streets are wider than they need to be, but because we don't pay attention, because we're lacadasical (on the whole) - we need that extra space. My father drilled that in to my brothers and I when we were little - he would point out gaps in the traffic ahead and tell us to ignore the lines on the road - but focus on the cars - and we had to tell him how many cars could drive on the road - same thing with bridges and other interesting traffic patterns. Anyway - as I pulled away from the curb a garbage truck turned on to the street and headed in our direction. The truck reached the point where the cars were parked before I reached the point where they were no longer on my right. I didn't think twice about it - I drove right between the truck and the parked cars, turned left at the green light, came to a stop, turned right on red, then turned right and pulled to the curb at the starting line. I knew (or at least I believed) I had done everything perfectly and I was expecting a little praise from the test administrator. He sat silently for what seemed like two minutes, scribbling on the page -- it was actually probably 15-20 seconds. I began to worry a little, "why is this taking so long I thought?" I figured it was a slam dunk, he'd say "good job, drive safely young man" and hand me whatever paperwork I needed to get my license. Finally he lifted his head and looking straight out through the windshield said "I should fail you for what you did back there." For a moment I didn't know what he was talking about. He paused then said "but you did everything else perfectly and demonstrated excellent control of the vehicle." That's when it dawned on me - there probably wasn't much clearance between the garbage truck and the parked cars - but I split them like I was riding my bicycle. He must have been somewhat impressed - or at least he wasn't so unimpressed that he failed me. So that's the story of how I passed my drivers test on the first try.

Would you like to hear the story about how it took my high school girlfriend until her FIFTH try before she passed ;)

Happy New Year everyone !

ps -- after reading all the other answers - I realize most of you learned to drive in, or at least it sounds like, Europe and Australia .. obviously the streets in Europe are on average much narrower - at least in most towns -- over here in the US most streets I'd imagine are a little bigger - but garbage trucks are probably bigger TOO ! haha!

Yes and God knows how I did it as I messed up my reverse round a corner and even stopped on a "Keep Clear" space! But the Examiner said that he could see I was a basically competent driver who was just nervous so he passed me!

My other half says I must have offered the Examiner sexual favours in order to pass despite making those mistakes (he took 3 attempts to pass his!). He is always slagging off my driving and saying he doesn't understand how I managed to pass, but then I remind him that I've been driving for longer than he has! Lol!

I passed 3rd time, i made what the test instructor called stupid mistakes and he could not understand why i had not been instructed otherwise by my instructor. The instructor i had was a strange little man who i thought was just a bit wacky...he was good at putting you at you're ease, but could sometimes be a bit rude (in a suggestive way). 2 weeks ago my instructor was jailed for sexual abuse of his female students, he had been abusing women for 5 years before the police finally took him seriously. Apparently he slowly groomed them until he felt he was safe to act, kinda has me wondering why he taught me the wrong things he did. Ooh turns my stomach. So any lady here who does not feel 100% sure of her driving instructor please do not hesitate to get a new one, gut instinct is a safe indicator and the alternative does not bear thinking about x x

Yes.
My wife passed 2nd time (faulty driving school car first time)
We both learnt to drive around Kensington, Chelsea and Fulham in London so taking the test in the leafy outskirts of London was a picnic.
