I recently watched bits and pieces of Pleasantville-I flipped past it after watching about 30 seconds of it thinking that it was another 40-50's movie depicting the world as a utopia. However I soon realized that this was exactly what the movie was speaking against, the main message being that we need to open up to new ideas and give up our conservative ways. I really liked the color differences that showed a character attaining multicolor when he or she opened up to the world.

What movies have strong messages that are similar to this?

Jewel In The Palace (Daejanggeum) is a drama series - not a movie - but it does wonders with its philosophical messages! It says everything from how "we need to open up to new ideas and give up our conservative ways" to how the world is far from being a utopia but hate and fear can be conquered by empathy and forgiveness, to how everything that happens is an opportunity for us to grow even if it seems to be in our way.

The overriding message is the power of love - for the ones closest to us, for the world and all its people, for the things we do, for the people we once did not understand. However controversial we know our decisions will be, whatever we have to go through...it is never wrong to make our decisions based on love.

Jewel In The Palace makes an interesting cultural experience too- it's set in 14th century Korea. That, on top of a wonderful plotline and brilliant characterisation greatly sensitive to the human experience. You will find yourself crying buckets and laughing till your sides hurt. Believe me it's well worth a watch!

Check out "No Man's Land" from 2001. It's part anti-war film, part satire, part comic-tragedy. Well acted and directed, and really quite fresh. It will probably be fresh long into the future because the subject isn't going away anytime soon. In this film, it's hard to find good guys or bad guys-- but there's plenty of confusion and a few precious moments of compassion (at least by the director).

Also: Seventh Seal (Bergman) and Fight Club, both mentioned above, are excellent thinking person's films.

"Into the Wild" the Sean Penn directed movie, it was just in the theatres, I mean just...so you might be able to catch it on the budget screen.

Its a total philosophical movie about a young man, maybe 21 yrs old or so that has a huge existential crisis. He negates his entire essence as a priviledged, rich college kid- gives it all up and disappears hitch-hiking throughout the U.S. to try to find himself and the true meaning of life....

Its based upon a true story....catch it in the theatre if you can, you won't be disappointed if youre looking for a philosophical flick

Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal"

In it, the protagonist goes through an existential crisis. Compelling movie.

One movie that comes to mind is one that doesn't immediately lend itself to philosophy, but I think it speaks to the same type of theme. The final scene brings it all together nicely.

"The Majestic" - starring Jim Carrey

[add] If you want a really psychedelic view, try these.

"Brazil' - starring Jonathan Pryce and Robert DeNiro
"Frankenstein: Unbound" - staring John Hurt

I liked the allegorical message of The Matrix but I also liked 'What the Bleep Do you Know?' as a mind bender (a cross between physics, metaphysics and parapsychology)

"Waking Life" - An existential, surreal film one can become quite immersed in. Very VERY philosophic message(s).

"Fight Club" - Outside of the sweaty glitz, the message in this film is right up your alley. It ought to carry the subtitle "A brief introduction to Nietzsche."

"Stranger Than Fiction" was a fun little movie and a bit of a departure for Will Ferrell. (It's been playing on cable lately.)
