psh, artificial is they way to go. lol So after Christmas we just take it down and put it back in the garage. My grandparents get real trees though, and they give it to us, and we plant it in our front yard.

I have an artificial tree, I take it down, pack it up and put it away. I got my 7 1/2 ' tree for $25 after Christmas. It helps to save the environment. You know "save a trees."

In Australia we cannot burn it - fireban is on. We place it on the nature strip and the garden garbage collector will come to collect for recycling ( mulch it). I prefer to get a small Christmas tree in a pot and use it yearly till it is too big to move in and out, then plant it in the garden.

I'm telling you, artificial is the way to go! The good ones don't look fake, and Glade makes so many Christmas-y smelling scents that you wouldn't even notice the lack of pine smell! When I had a real tree though, we'd throw it away around New Year's. What a waste!

My tree goes on a brush pile at the edge of my woods as part of a habitat for small woodland creatures. I don't burn it, as I think that is a waste. I have also taken it out to my yard after Christmas and decorated it for the birds, with suet, popcorn strings, birdseed balls made with a peanut butter mix, and other things the birds wll eat. Then in the spring, it is out to the brush pile with it. If you have a mulching machine, you can cut off the branches and chop them up. them. I have used the trunk to make a walking stick with, before, also.
Our city has collection points for cut trees, they chop them into mulch that they use in the city parks, or give away free to residents later in the summer, if they have extra.
You can also give them to your local conservation department if they have a program where they sink them into area lakes for habitat for fish.
A cut tree is totally recylcable, all thru its life.

My mother has an artificial tree- Which I despise because it uses more energy and it hurts the earth's atmosphere. Next year Im planning on buying a real tree. We have had the same artificial one for the past 5 years, I say, even though our house is pretty "green", thats our downfall.
You can buy a real tree, and after your done with it, search online for people that can come pick it up for you. They do it for free and they recycle it.

call your local zoo. i read recently (in a kid's national geographic magazine) that alot of tree farms will donate the unsold trees after the holidays to zoos, as toys for the animals. with the story was a pic of an elephant playing with a tree. some of the larger cities will make a special pick-up of the trees to mulch them for parks or whatever. don't feel too bad, i once left my tree up till april 5.

In the county where I live, you can drop your tree off at specified places and they mulch them all up.
