It's a tapered cylinder (like a marrette) with 'teeth' on the inside of the small end. The 'teeth' point in and are on a spring so they slide up and down. I cannot figure out what they are for and was wondering if anyone else knew. I have pictures of two bit cases with the items in the case. You can view them at http://www.flickr.com/photos/21798550@N07/?saved=1

Any help with this would be great. Thanks.

OK, if it's for countersinking, how do you use it then?

they are counter sink.its you put the screw inside where the teeth are. the drill then screws them into the wood/drywall.
the drill continues to sink the screw until this item pops the screw loose.
it should leave a circle the size and shape of a hammer head.

The two grey colored plastic things on the sides of the spade bits are depth stops. They slide onto the drills so that you can set them to a certain depth that you want your drill to cut to, then when you get to the stop, you pull the drill back out. Then every hole is the same depth. I have a set in my drill box.

i've never figured it out. i've thrown two sets of them away. if it's true that they are drill bit depth stops, I wish they would have labeled mine as such. I can't try one to see if this is what they are, because I threw all mine away to make space in the cases for other spare driver bits. However, they sure are not countersink bits.

No its not for countersinking its for measuring how far you want to drill in to the material. It slides over the drill bit and shows u wen to stop so that u dont drill in too far or 2 shallow.... itsl like wrapping a bit of tape around a drill bit....u stop when it hits the wood....or say u were having sex and you had a mole on your penis(dont know if that is possinle but anyways) the girl didnt want the mole to go inside her to she puts a lacky band up to that spot. then she knows wen to stop... GET IT???

I think they are used for cleaning the pitch and wood shavings from the flukes ( the spiral recesses on a drill bit).

its for use in wood you use that thing "im not sure whats its called" to make screws set-in the wood it makes the hole big enough for the head of the screw to set in and not to be seen and you put putty in the hole after so you dont see the screw

it is called a countersink.it is used to recess the screwhead into whatever your screwing into,it really only works with wood or that type of consistency.

counter sinking makes the drill hole easier to drill in.
