I need to upgrade my internet on my laptop so I can make my laptop wireless with my wireless card and router that I have. That way both can be on the internet at the same time. I just need to update the IE that is on there so I can get my wireless card to work on it. It is an older modle laptop it has win 2000 on it I need to gain internet access so I can upgrade everything on it is why I am asking.

Almost that simple. You will need to install the drivers that come with the adapter. Then connect the cable and possibly reboot to have internet. But that will give you an ethernet connection.
I assume your laptop does not have an ethernet port now? Most these days do have one.
And those that are saying you need a switch. what for if you disconnect your desktop and connect your laptop no switch is needed! Now if you want to connect your desktop TO your laptop you do need a switch between them or a crossover cable.
Add: Well, updating IE is not going to make your wireless card work! Your wireless should work with ANY version of IE. If the wireless card is not working it is a DRIVER issue / Operating System issue and not a browser issue. With 2000 you need to have a wireless card that is 2000 compatible! Adding a USB ethernet will (if it has 2000 drivers!) allow you to use an ethernet cable, but you may find that with 2000 it doesn't work correctly either. Check with the wireless card manufacturer for the correct Win2K driver! You should be able to use your wireless once that is installed!

Assuming your desktop computer was configured to share an internet connection, and assuming you're going to leave the desktop on all the time, and if you're comfortable being physically tethered to your desk, then yes. But that would defeat the purpose of having a laptop at all, you might as well use the desktop.
I don't see why you'd need an ethernet adapter, pratically all computers these days have an ethernet jack. The easier way to do this is to just buy a router and an extra ethernet cable, connect your dsl/cable, desktop, and notebook to the router, and you're good to go.
But if your notebook has a wireless card, or if you're willing to buy one in addition, the best choice would be to get a wireless router, then you can connect the desktop and connection to the router, and then just connect from your laptop wherever in the house.

No, that will NOT work.
You would have to have a cross over cable to even get a network connection. Internet will not work unless you setup Internet connection sharing, and that can be a pain, especially if you are not technically savvy. A basic working knowledge of routing and gateways is needed.
You just need a hub or switch. Plug that into where your internet computer is plugged into, then plug all the computers you want into your hub / switch.

No. Because what you need is an Ethernet switch. These can cost as little a $30 so why cause a unnecessary hassle.

attempt shifting the Modem to a distinctive place. some modems do in contrast to being close to different instantaneous products collectively with a arms loose telephone. or perhaps the instantaneous mouse, keyboard or printer can intrude with it. circulate it approximately 6 ft away in case you are able to.
