a gift card to walmart would be good. That way they can buy whatever they need for the baby. Probably diapers. Lots of them.

Don't spend money on stupid things they won't use. Call and ask them if they already have these things which are essential and most can be found for under or close to 100 dollars: baby crib, car seat, stroller, changing station or roll out pad. If they already have these or you can't find one in your price range, these are also equally important,if not as long lasting gifts: Lots and lots of diapers. If you choose to use all your money on diapers, remember babies grow.Get a few packs in newborn size, then one in each size up until money runs out. They will use and appreciate this gift. Not your thing?Clothes and blankies. Can't get enough of those. Once again, do not waste money on frivolous things. Onesies or simple, cute, yet affordable outfits are fine.Buy a few diffrent sizes, though.Everyone else will have had the same idea, and if your friend has two hundread onesies in newborn and three month sizes, yours may never even be used before the baby grows.Soft, plush, washable blankets are ideal.Wahsclothes,too. You might also consider getting them a backseat mirror for the car. Whatever you do, do not buy a diaper bag.Mom already picked the diaper bag out, she's got that covered. It either goes with baby's room, main color theme,or mom's purse.Leave that be. Hope this proves helpful. If all else fails, send them a traveler's check,or a gift card to Wal-mart or Babies R US

I told my family this Christmas that if they were to buy my son anything, the most appreciated gift would be a gift card. It might feel cute to buy a little outfit, but by the time they actually wash it and put it on him/her they've probably out grown it. It's the winter and my son is always in a sleeper and blankets to keep warm. Since diapers, wipes, formula and clothes need to be bought weekly, the gift card is the perfect solution. New parents get overwhelmed with clothes from friends/family who have had babies, so to add to the bundles of clothes becomes more of a headache. We have already been thinking of exchanging clothes that still have tags on them for the next size up.

you can always ask if the parents are registered anywhere, though since the baby was already born they may not be anymore if they ever even were.
the most practicle thing to get a newborn is always clothes or products used everyday on the baby (diapers, wipes). since a newborn cannot sit up or move much at all, they cant really enjoy toys at this age. onesies are always something useful since babies where them most of the time and they are inexpensive, so you could get many of them. also, if you didnt want to purchase products, im sure they would always appreciate gift cards to baby stores or even target etc. good luck!

Oh gracious, what can't you get LOL.
Things to consider- don't buy baby clothes as they grow out of them too quickly. You could try for something deeply personal like buying a star ( a bit corny but kinda fun) or you could go for something practical like opening a bank account for the baby and depositing the money.
Another fantastic idea is to offer to have the babies first outfit and photo framed into a shadow box as a keepsake.
Myself, I love to make up a memory box by purchasing a lovely small trunk from an antique store and place a list inside so they can fill it with things like the first outfit baby wore home from the hospital, their baby book, first tooth, hand and footprints, first family photo, cards from well wishers etc etc etc Include a handwritten letter by you welcoming the baby into the world and telling them a little about our world today and your hopes and dreams for them. Believe me, by the time they hit school, the parents will be looking for a second one.

Send him a gift card for target or walmart. Parents always need diapers, wipes, or other little things for the baby. I know when i had my daughter I loved when I received gift cards.
If you really want to get him something instead of a gift card you can see if he is registered at target or babies r us and purchase him something off his registry, that way you know he wants/needs it.
Hope this helps!

Money is always good. Try a gift card for Target or babies r us. I don't want anyone to buy clothing for my son because I want to be the decider of what he wears. If they are registered anywhere, find their registry and shop off that.

A gift certificate for some diapers cause he's going to need a lot of them, but a gift certificate is great because he and his wife or girlfriend can go buy the baby whatever they want

A gift certificate would be nice and thoughtful. New baby usually means money is a little tight, and it would help out. Let him get what he needs the most.

I think a check card would be greatly appreciated. There are so many unexpected expenses that come with parenting that the cash would come in handy. Besides it's also a very inexpensive gift to mail. Buying a car seat, clothing, or toys could be expensive to ship.
