This is a good website that gives you the chronological discovery of inheritance and the DNA. It basically started with scientists noticing how mutations (diseases, phenotypic traits, etc) were passed to the progeny. If you want to know more about a specific experiment, just google the name of the scientist that appears on the left of the table in the website.

Hope it helps!

Note: About Jimmie's comment. Take into account that the DNA was discovered in the early 50s. Mendel and others didnt know the DNA existed. the person that finally proved the link between the DNA and heredity was Martha Chase and Alfred Hershey using phages (these two scientist are also in the chronological list I sent you).

Ahh yes I was getting that mixed up!

Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase were deffinately the ones who discovered that DNA is indeed the molecule of heredity. I will give you a link to that experiment, but simply put they tagged the protein and the genome with different radioactive particles and saw which actually was transmitted to the organism.

I suggest you start with Wikipedia. You have asked for a significant body of scientific work, it relates to the discovery of cell division, the part of the cell nucleus in the reproduction process, the part of genes, etc.
