Freeze it with an ice cube. If that doesn't work you can try paint thinner to break the adhesive bond, but that's a lot harder to predict what it would do to your carpet's color/consistentcy

Step One Scrape away as much of the gum as you can using a spatula or spoon (to protect carpet fibers).
Step Two Vacuum or brush away loose pieces.
Step Three Rub the remaining gum with a plastic bag filled with ice until the gum is frozen.
Step Four Chip away the frozen gum fragments using a spatula or spoon.
Step Five Dissolve any final traces of the stuff by dabbing with a small amount of dry-cleaning fluid. Blot.
Step Six Blot on a detergent solution of 1/4 tsp. mild dishwashing liquid and 1 cup (8 fl oz/250 ml) warm water.
Step Seven Rinse thoroughly.

Spray a small amount of WD40 on it and work it around with your fingers. It will melt the gum. Paint thinner may melt your carpet depending on what kind of carpet it is. Test the WD40 on an unseen area first it rarely stains but always check first. Hope it helps.

First try ICE it gets it hard and if its not a deep shag it should pull out. If that does not work (i know it sounds weard) use penutbutter. I know it works in hair.
