They didn't have television, or automobiles, or computers, so I guess there were a few things they didn't invent. By the way, the Greek names for things, from cavemen on up, were not given by the Ancient Greeks. Rather, modern scientists have give Ancient Greek or Ancient Latin names to things. It's easier to use an ancient language (one that doesn't change, as modern, living languages do) so the meaning of the name remains the same for al time.

Is it true about the Greeks??? This was in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" that the father was always saying that everything was invented by the Greeks. Well - they sure did invent a lot of stuff - like the whole idea of philosophy and speculation. They had all the gods, but they seemed to be able to step outside of that quite early in history and look squarely at reality. If you read Thucydides's book about the war in Greece - it's just modern in every way - it's like reading about our war in Iraq - and yet it was written WAY back BC. I know the Greeks didn't invent the Taco - or Electric Lights - or Computers.....

Many scientific terms with Greek roots are actually modern inventions using Greek elements. You could coin some scientific words of your own if you learned some Greek. For instance, the Greek word for lizard was sauros (as in dinosaur), and the word for red was erythros (as in the antibiotic erythromycin--ever see those big, dark pink pills?). So if you discovered a new species of dinosaur and ascertained that it had red skin, you could name it an erythrosaur.
No, the ancient Greeks didn't know about the existence of dinosaurs or pre-homo sapiens species of humans. They also didn't have a real numerical system, but used the twenty-four letters of their alphabet for numbering. (That's one reason why the Iliad and the Odyssey have twenty-four books each.)

Catapults, anchors, the Socratic method, bricks, central heating, and a lot of architectural stuff. The also reasoned out the existence of atoms by pure logic. Yes the were masters of description and categorization, but that was just a means to an end.
