all i want to do is take the ethernet cable that is currently plugged into my desktop and plug it into my laptop to get on the web. the modem is working fine because there is no problem getting on the web with the desktop. but, when i plug the eth. cable into the laptop, i can't get on the web. i'm showing two enabled available connections on the laptop, but when i try to connect, they both say that i have limited or no connectivity. i've gone through "internet properties" too and clicked on the "connections" tab and made sure that "never dial a connection" is selected as an option. i'm not sure what to do at this point. thanks

hey this use to happen to me a lot too.
well there can be a lot of possiblities.
-did you restart you lap top?
-IS the ethernet installed on your lap top?

You can call your internet provider and tell them your problem, they will tell you to try different things to make it work. i had to do that a couple times..

Have you ran the Network Setup Wizard for your connection? If not, do so now. Open the network setup Wizard either via the Control Panel, or the Start Menu Search Box, (type in Network setup Wizard) or open Network Connections and select Setup a new Connection.

Simply follow the pages, ensure it has the same Workgroup Name as the other computer, type in any password or User Name if your ISP requires one, and finish up. This Wizard sets up all the needed configuration settings in the registry, and enables the connection.

If this does not work you should do some research Online, here are a couple of links to get you started:

Good luck and I hope you get this solved soon, please have a pleasant evening.

What you need to do, in order to remove that "Limited or No Connectivity" settings on your Local Area Connection. You have to right click on the Local Area Connection and click on Properties. Under General tab, at the bottom of it, there a lil box that says "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity. You need to uncheck that box and click on OK. Now, if you look at on your Local Area Connection it should no longer be "Limited or No connectivity" But Acquiring Network Address then Connected. Check the IP Address under status. If you got the correct ip address of your router or modem that means that you are now connected to the internet. That's all you need to do.

If you see a LAN and it is enabled then it means your laptop has a network connection. Right click on that LAN icon make sure all is checked: TCP IP/ Share etc.. YOu should have clicked & checked. Also make sure that your firewall does not prevent you to access the web. Turn off the firewall to try.

please ensure the ip configuration is excatly the same as the desktop. if the modem is built in with DHCP then select automatic IP address assign option, same goes to the DNS setting.
