Usually when I draw, I start out with light strokes. However, as I progress through the drawing, my strokes get harder, and I end up drawing harder than I intended to, which makes it difficult to erase sometimes.

Does anyone know how to solve this little problem?

Forgot to mention, I don't try to define the lines with harder pencil strokes, my hand just starts pressing harder on the pencil throughout the duration of drawing the picture.

Get an egg timer and set the timer for 5 minutes. When it dings, sit back, take a breath, look at your strokes and adjust lighter.

By taking short drawing segments you can train yourself to lighten up. Also use a very soft pencil, it'll make erasing the marks easier.

Instead of using pressure to define your bolder strokes, perhaps you can use a softer pencil. I'm not sure what you are using at the present, but pencil graphite softness typically ranges from 6H(very hard) to 6B(very soft). You can go to an art store and try it out for yourself. It's relatively cheap. When using these pencils, draw as you have, but when you want bolder marks opt for the softer graphite. Buy a range to fit your likings. I usually stick to about four or five pencils.

Or on the other hand, you can just build up your drawings with constant light pressure. There's nothing wrong with this except that it might take forever.

I tend to do this too..I also tend to clench my jaw and get really intense. Even when I try and force myself not to I end up pressing mega hard towards the end.
My remedy, relax as much as possibly, keep yourself aware that you are doing it at all times, and play as much lighthearted relaxing music as possible :)
