I'm from the UK wanting to study in the USA. But I have just found out 1 of the universities I was looking at is apparantly a 'Community college'...What does that mean?? Will it affect the credibility of my degree when I graduate from this kind of school? It is called 'NYIT' - New York Institute of Technology

And how easy is it to transfer from one university to another once i'm in the States?

Thanks

A community college is a place where you can take care of your first 2 years of coursework. It is much less expensive than most other colleges and universities. The admissions criteria and difficulty of coursework is also much less stringent.

It would seem odd for someone from outside the United States to go to a community college. For one thing, since you're out of area, you won't get the tuition breaks that someone living nearby would. However, I worked with girl from Thailand who got an Associates in Communication from a community college after getting her Master's degree. Weird stuff can happen.

Typically community colleges have Community College at the end of the name.

New York Institute of Technology sounds like it wouldn't be one, but it MIGHT be a trade school. That's a place where you learn things for a job but aren't "transfer" credits (instead they're occupational credits which won't transfer anywhere else).

Go to NYIT's website and look for anything saying that it's a community college or a trade school.

A community college is generally a school that has a 2 year program leading to an associates degree. These schools often stress vocational degrees. Often their students go on to complete a 4 year degree in a college of university.

Having said that NYIT is NOT a community college. See:

I would not consider it a top school like MIT or Cal Tech, but it does provide a 4 year college degree. Good luck!

NYIT is a university, not a community college. A community college is the current name for what used to be called a "junior" college - one which offers only 2-year degrees, like associates degrees or technical certificates. Any school which offers 4-year degrees is NOT a community college.

Many people spend their first two years at a community college and earn their associates' degree, then transfer to a four-year school for the last two years of their bachelors' degree. It tends to be a less expensive way of getting a degree.

That is correct. New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) is a private university that offers 90 degree programs, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees, in more than 50 fields of study, including architecture and design; arts and sciences; education; engineering and computing sciences; health professions; management; and osteopathic medicine. NYIT is not a community college.

A community college is another name for a Junior College. Its a place where you go to get a 2 year degree and complete all of your general education before you go on to a 4 year university and take classes specific to your major

NYIT awards both Masters and limited Doctorates. They have an MBA program.

It's technically not a university but more of a college.

They specialize in science and technology which is why they call it a Institute of Technology.

Community colleges only offer 2 year AA programs.
