You should log into your router and check to see if you have MAC access control enabled. If so, you will need to specifically allow your new laptop access to the router by adding it to the allowed computers list.

You also need to verify that Windows is managing wireless Networks. If you have a Dell, Dell often has their own wire network configuration that is access through Start/Programs.

If you have a wireless connection in the network connections window (rightclick My Network/properties) right clik the wireless connection and select properties, the select the Wireless Network tab and add the netowrk there.

You should try the Wireleess connection wizard fro Control Panel or Start/Programs/Accessories/Communications. Then add teh network configuration manually.

If it is secured, then it is odd that the dialog box for the passphrase doesn't appear. Have you tried opening the available network connections from the Start menu or the notification area or both? If you only tried one method of access, try another. Maybe it isn't secured?

Listen, this is really odd if it is secured and I am a bit confused why it wouldn't appear. Perhaps you should open the router configuration pages and make sure it is configured for security. I understand you are not able to connect, or you wouldn't be here asking this question, but perhaps the security key isn't entered correctly or the page wasn't updated properly when it was first configured. It is worth a try.

Here is some more information too, which may be of assistance to you:

Read through these and see if one offers a solution.

Here is another area of Microsoft and see if it offers anything of assistance:

Hope the information helps you get this issue solved, and please have a good evening.

*note* Even if two networks have the same name due to a failure to change the SSID, clicking on a secured network will still popup the passphrase/password entry dialog box, and if it were an unsecured network and close enough in range, you would be able to simply click on the Connect button and connect and use the connection, regardless of whether or not it is yours or a neighbors.

So, it is very odd that a secured network is not popping up the passphrase dialog box. Very odd indeed.

I do agree that you may be forced to remove all the installation software installed when the router was added, set the router back to factory specifications, remove it and start all over again.

If all else fails, contact the technical department of the manufacturer. The phone number should be in the manual, and if not, then log onto the website and go to the support area to locate the phone number. Sometimes calling will fix the issue. I would call before setting it all back to factory specs and removing it from the network and starting over.

Is your network name "Netgear"? Could you be hooking up to the wrong router?
Try changing the name of the router and see what happens.
If all else fails, reset the router and set up both machines from scratch.
