or should we say economics-after all, it's all about the dollar or the euro or whatever you trade in (right?), just like a game of hearts? everyone -vs- the leader?

Yes, in a way...In a game of Hearts, everybody should be against the leader, but when there are unskilled players, they don't get it and drop the queen, at the first opportunity, on just any player! That screws up the game. Economics can be just like that. There are many who are oblivious to what's going on!

In as much as all the current players utilize fiat (i.e. unbacked and government mandated) currency, yes, in more of a "beggar thy neighbor" approach via whoever devalues their currency the fastest "loses the least".
