i dont know the history of gates. but he got into harvard, so he had the grades. and grades dont mean smarts, so he put in the work. so under my above statement gates would be a winner from 15 on.

Not true, I hope! Before I was diagnosed manic depressive, I was an absolute whore. Needless to say I'm not now I'm medicated. However, I was also considered extra bright intellectually and that's gone with all the drugs and ect.
EDIT: JF, how would you account for the quiet, reticent and reliable female I am now if people's personalities don't change?

People's personalities don't often change.
A person's degree of understanding would not change.Just as a person with an analytical mind would not lose it.They way people approach certain situations doesn't change,it's part of a deep routed personality with us from birth.
However knowledge can change and social graces can change (people mature)
School isn't always an indicator of a persons future performance.Infact it's usually a poor way to judge a person, because schools can be *so* restrictive of a persons free will and individualism. Most things in school are done by the book and any deviation from this method of conduct is frowned upon and becomes a black mark on a persons record.Often people only really bloom when they've left the restraints of the classroom and can explore their skills and personality in the real world.Away from the peer pressure, parents and restrictive rules of the school. The real world and the world within the school fences are two very different places and it's amazing how a person can change when leaving one and joining another.

Yes, this is true PROVIDED there are no intervening variables. In general, past behavior is the best predicator of future behavior. If you are interested in being a psychologist, it would be better is you thought your efforts could provide some assistance in changing the course of someone's behavior. That is called shaping behavior. The basic tenets of positive reinforcement (a reward for desired behavior) and negative reinforcement ( which is NOT providing a painful event..it is removing a painful event. Like turning off a mild electrical stimulant when the behavior is corrected) are helpful in changing behavior.

That's a variation on nature vs nurture.
Take your graduate photo and compare those photos to the high school years books. Then continue on to grade school. Finally get out the baby photos. At what point do things fall apart?
Consider Bill Gates. His mug shot is at:

or this one

Would you have been able to predict he'd end up owning and running Microsoft?
By the same standard, this individual appears well on his way to becoming a success:

Too bad he was executed for being a serial killer.

They are good indicators, yes, if you're making a bet. But they aren't absolutes. People do change. Just join myspace or go to a high school reunion to see role reversals in action. People grow, mature, experience.. they don't tend to be flat characters.

It is all in the attitude. I disagree. People change a tremendous amount. Unless they believe that they can't change. Also sometimes people's talents don't come out until after school.
