First of all you have got the wrong war.
It was WW2 and occurred on 6th June 1944.
It was the invasion of Normandy ,France which had been occupied by German forces since 1940.
The invading forces were the Allies which consisted of forces from Britain,USA,Canada,France, Poland,Belgium and Netherlands.
The invasion was launched from Britain onto the beaches of Normandy.
It was the greatest sea-borne invasion in history.
After about seven weeks intense fighting the German defenders were overrun and the Allied forces quickly liberated the rest of France and Belgium and went on to defeat Germany in 1945

D-Day was between Allied and Nazi Germany. Allied force stormed the beach of Normandy and began a costly offensive drive as they try to punch thru German defense. This was a turning point of WWII in Europe as Germany began to lose the war. The movie Saving Private Ryan where Tom Hank was charging to the beach, its like that.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-Day
D-Day was the 6th of June 1944. The allies invaded France at Normandy Beach (Omaha Beach and others) to strike against Germany.
You could check out the video, "The Longest Day" starring John Wayne (and many others) and watch it. It gives a fairly good presentation.

They did in fact bomb the beaches, but in order to maintain the surprise of WHERE they were landing, they also bombed pretty much the whole French coastline. It wasnt overlooked at all. They also pounded the beaches with Naval gun fire just before the landings.

There are dozens of books on that topic. I suggest you read a few of them. Barring that, what does your history book say about it?
