Go to work on the Tow boats on the river. I have a friend that has worked the barges for 10 years and is now making $350-$450 a day on the river.

Edit to Dice Man have you ever been to St. Louis? It is the 6th largest metropolis in the USA. Also to add to my answer, there are federal jobs available there that pay that much for starting wages.

A lot depends on what your skills and experience are. There are lots of openings in the medical fields for nurses and med techs. There are some skilled factory jobs at the car plants and brewery that pay well but openings are few and far between. If you are in a construction trade and the home building market improves that would also pay well for a journeyman. Truck driving is a possibility if you are licensed to drive the big rigs.

Having a degree and experience are the most important.
Finding a business or facility that interests you is also very important.
Hospitals and banks are a good place to start. There are plenty in the St. Louis area.

I am also looking for something that I can do and make that kind of money now. I am in school and want to work less for more pay I guess. But so far the only thing I can think of now that you can probably make that type of money with little schooling is welding and being a LPN.
