I'm visiting my mom's house for the week. How can I get her to turn up the heat? It's FREEZING in here! She is really cheap (and kindof poor) so she keeps the house at 60 degrees. It is ALWAYS SO COLD! She does this to save money. How can I get her to turn up the heat? She is really hard-headed!

Well, you got some pretty good answers, but how about another solution.........

Stop visiting. Tell her she is MORE than welcome to come over to your house ANYTIME, but you are not comfortable visiting at her house because it's too cold and you don't like being that cold all the time.

I keep the heat up to 72 and my roommate turns it down to 68 when he comes home. I freeze!! I don't say anything, I just turn it back up.

I don't know about you, but my body starts to hurt and my limbs freeze up on me when I'm too cold. Feels like they won't move. I guess it's age. LOL!

Give her some money for the heat, with oil and gas prices this days they can ready drag you to the poor house, I keep my tenant's house at 70 and just paid a bill for $600, that is just ONE month worth of heating gas, I understand her pain.

Hon, you already said she kinda poor, that's probably why. She can't afford to keep it up any higher or she might not have any if she runs out. If you really want the heat up offer to give her some money to pay for the extra heat you use.

If she really hard headed you're not likely to change her mind.
Medically speaking, the best temp. the body to responds in the winter is 68 degrees. You may save just a little from month to month, but your body has to work harder at temps lower then that. Better on the bill and worse on you....which do you prefer?

Unless you are going to pay her heating bill, you don't get to demand that she turns up the heat. Layer your clothing and wear thick socks.

Or next year, invite her to come stay with you...

You probably can't. And why would you want to? She can't afford it. That's really selfish. I'm impressed with her for saving energy especially because she needs to do it in order to live within her means. What you need to do is put more clothes on and think of all the food you can eat that you usually wouldn't because your body burns more cals when you're trying to stay warm. YAY, mom!!!

Put on a sweater and thick socks. Offer to help with the heating bill.

next time refuse the invitation and instead ask her to your home. if she refuses and then insists you come to her icebox, then wear many sweaters and a wool hat and gloves, i'm serious!! she'll get the point.

p.s. perhaps it's time to get her a space heater, those dont need alot of electricity (not as much as central heat) and work great!!

If she is poor she may qualify for financial help. In Illinois they have a program that helps pay utilities. Also, help out by paying her bill.
