I'm visiting my mom's house for the week. How can I get her to turn up the heat? It's FREEZING in here! She is really cheap (and kindof poor) so she keeps the house at 60 degrees. It is ALWAYS SO COLD! She does this to save money. How can I get her to turn up the heat? She is really hard-headed!

Keeping the temperature down really does save money.
You might try offering to help pay the bill in exchange for turning the heat up.

Well, you got some pretty good answers, but how about another solution......... Stop visiting. Tell her she is MORE than welcome to come over to your house ANYTIME, but you are not comfortable visiting at her house because it's too cold and you don't like being that cold all the time. I keep the heat up to 72 and my roommate turns it down to 68 when he comes home. I freeze!! I don't say anything, I just turn it back up. I don't know about you, but my body starts to hurt and my limbs freeze up on me when I'm too cold. Feels like they won't move. I guess it's age. LOL!

Surprise her with a little note explaining to her that you have put a sum of money on her fuel account ( what does she heat with, gas, electric--locate her company) so that she will not have to be cold the rest of the season. I'll bet she , too, wishes it were warmer, and is just trying to get by. Did you know there are fuel assistance programs for the financially challenged that she may qualify for? Contact the local health and Human Services Department, Salvation Army, or other charitable organization. Easiest is to just put some money on her account yourself, if you are able.

Maybe you should help by finding the areas where all the cold is coming from & take care of as much as you can, so she won't be having to skimp so much. Maybe you need some blood builder, so 60 won't freeze you too death. Also, dress appropriately, when you 're in there.

Maybe she is trying to get a child of hers who may be a insensitive clod to leave.

If my mom had to live in a house with the temperature at 60 degrees, I'd find a way to help her with the fuel costs.

why turn up the heat

wrap yourself in a blanket put on some warm socks and talk to your mother

or you could help here insulate the place ...caulk up the draft causing cracks

use a 'rope caulk' which is removable for the drafty windows

maybe get her some plastic to cover the windows to help them get air tight

besides the moving around will keep you warm

First of all keeping a home at 60 degrees during the winter is not good for your mom or the house....that temp is borderline for causing water pipes to explode and break during a bad cold snap.....I dont think your mom would want Niagara Falls in her home if a water pipe burst, also walls sweat when it is too cold....also your mom will be getting sick and aggravate an arthritis or bursitits condition she could be having or getting. That temp is not good at all for any person of any age.....try to reason with her..

Bring plenty of sweaters. You are a guest in her home. If she can't afford to pay the higher bill, you need to be respectful of that. Like the others, suggest paying part of her bill. Or just shut up and enjoy the fact that she has invited you over, very bundled up.

by handing her 100.00 or each month for the heat bill cause that what it gonna cost for heating at 70 degree to warm you! or put on sweats and a sweater and get a throw for your lap.

Does she have a fire place? Or you could give her money to turn the heat up :). Try getting lots of warm clothing and hand warmers
