Speaking from someone who works at a museum that features MANY state native WILD animals, some who are apart of a captive breeding program, I will say I don't agree with you.
Until the investigations are finished, they won't know for sure why this tiger escaped. It could be just a fluke in the caging system, or, like they're investigating now, it very well could've been caused by human error (a keeper didn't secure the cages properly) or even a rage caused by someone taunting the poor animal. Regardless though, I don't think it's fair for the SF zoo to be criticized for this incident. I'm sure they do their best to care for these animals every day. I think it was just a fluke that this happened.
I do believe though, that the AZA should come back in and conduct another inspection of the zoo's facilities. The AZA gave them their accredidation, which is NOT easy to get by the way, and they can take that accredidation away just as quickly. I think they need to reevaluate the location.

the problem is not having animals in captivity. is not having any "wild" for them to live in. animals are endangered for two reasons. lack of habitat and being hunted by man for either sport or financial gain. the ONLY place where animal are safe is in zoos, animal parks, etc.
and where would we put all the animals from all the Zoos, etc? would we release them to the wild? the problem with that is the cost of moving all these animals. the second problem, that for a lot of them, humans equal food and care. they would not know how to hunt and would either die or approach a human expecting food and end up getting killed. then the only other option is to just kill the animals in captivity. and if you are an animal lover, is that really an option?
the truth is that this is a much complicated issue than PETA or any other group care to realize. without the animals that are in proper zoological parks, a lot of species would disappear and not because of evolution but because of human intervention and abuse.

That assumes the only role zoo animals play is providing entertainment. Do the tigers win if they go completely extinct and there are no captive breeding programs to preserve them?

sorry but i think that that is retarded
why should we try to get ride of some of the last animals of a species! the only reason why we have zoos is because of man...we cut down all the forests that these animals are in and what we just expect them to move on! i love zoos, they are very educational and help save species.

good idea. It's tragic they killed the tiger - they should have used a tranquilizer instead. This seem very suspicious that the three guys were teasing the tiger. The zoo should have been move involved with tranquilizer gun instead of police involvement.

I think it is ridiculous.
I think that many zoos take very good care of the animals. This was a freak accident. Everyone is overreacting to this. This animal is wild and something must have startled it.
