From what I learned in my History courses, they were hoping to regain their former glory. The Ottoman Empire wasn't in a great shape, and they'd just fought and lost several wars in the Balkans. In the Balkan wars, they had fought against Russia, and Russo-Turkish relations were pretty bad. Therefore, the Ottoman Empire wasn't willing to ally itself with Russia. Germany promised the Ottomans both money and a future control of Russian territory if they joined the war on the Axis side. So they did.

Germany had been investing in the Ottoman Empire for some years before WW1 as it tried to get a warm water port which bypassed the Mediterranean which was under the control of the British Navy.
To that end they were trying to build a railway from Berlin to Baghdad which would enable them to access the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.
They were also trading arms Turkey to modernise its army.
The Russian Empire and the British Empire were the natural enemies of the Ottoman Empire so when these two empires united to fight Germany the Turks felt that their future was in an alliance with the German Empire.
It led to the destruction of the Ottoman Empire

They were allies with Germany and the Austrian- Hungarian empire. Britain had also threatened some of their empire in the Middle East and decided to align with the Central Powers for their support against Great Britain.
