Anything by Carl Hiaasen is good. He writes goofy mysteries set in Florida.
Michael McClelland writes similar stories to Hiaasen, and is just as good.
I hear the Hamish MacBeth series by M.C. Beaton is also good.

Anything by Agatha Christie, John Dickson Carr (aka Carter Dickson), Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine, or Sharyn McCrumb. I've found that I like to read an author's works, especially when they involve recurring characters even if the books don't constitute a series in the sense that the Harry Potter books are a series, in the order in which they were written, so I'd recommend starting Christie with The Mysterious Affair at Styles, Carr with It walks by Night, Rendell with From Doon with Death, and McCrumb with If Ever I Return, Pretty Peggy, O.

I have a good friend who enjoyed mystery novels, but mostly fantasy ones. One day, she picked up a thick and daunting book. Having strayed so far from her adventurous journeys and magical realms, she has continuously looked upon Sir Author Conan Doyle as her source for enjoyment.
Novels:
A Study in Scarlet
The Sign of the Four
The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Valley of Fear
Short Stories:
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
The Return of Sherlock Holmes
His Last Bow
The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes

I just LOVE most of James Patterson's books. He is a very good writer and you don't figure out the ending right away because it never is the person you think it is. I didn't like the ones set in the ancient past (just a couple of them) but most of them are great. All the series. Alex Cross, Women's Murder Club and the others. Also Maximum Ride series is fantasy but it's not bad either.

THE MALTESE FALCON by Dashiell Hammet
THE BIG SLEEP by Raymond Chandler
Two of the best - old, but easily available, and terrific reads.

Agatha Christie! I really like the Hercule Poirot books, not so much the others ones, but that's just me.
And they are really easy to find. My library has almost all of her books.
