Unlike today's Democrats, Roosevelt and Truman did not put up with any crap. Roosevelt's policies brought America out of the Great Depression and he led one of the most powerful militaries in the world from a wheelchair. If people whined about the war, he threw them in jail and therefore, everyone united and our enemies saw this and Rosevelt was smart enough to realize the danger of having our enemies see anti-war communists making division in the country, unlike Nixon or Johnson during Vietnam. Truman was the last great Democrat the United States of America will ever have. If anyone attacked the US, they knew Harry Truman would strike back with an atomic bomb and blow their country into a parking lot. Many say Kennedy was great, but Kennedy was a joke who won the presidency based on his looks and his father's mafia support, not because of his intelligence or leadership skills (or lack thereof). Clinton was having sex with his interns instead of hunting down Osama.

Some of the answers to this question are amusing. A few things seem to have escaped people's notice:

1) Imprisoning citizens for speaking out against a war is wrong, unconstitutional, reckless, and completely against the spirit of our nation. Did I wander into a parallel universe where America mimics Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia?

2) Truman and Roosevelt were both to the left of the democrats today on economic policy. They were more right wing on foreign policy and social issues but on economics they were almost socialists. They supported tax rates that were much higher than taxes today. Anyone who claims that the democrats became socialist after Truman and Roosevelt has no clue what they are talking about.

I'd think today's Democrats actually echo FDR's policies well. They are for uplifting the average American as was FDR, they agree that war should be avoided if possible but, if necessary should be fought in entirety and not with a fraction of the force necessary to do the job, and they believe in creating a strong economy.

Truman inherited the office during FDR's fourth term and one of his first actions was using nuclear weapons on Japan. This ended the war but, also was viewed by many people as being unnecessary. His policies were mostly directed at securing the stability of the post-WWII status of Europe. He had to deal with a Republican Congress (which he tried to "scare the hell out of") during his presidency and was a staunch advocate of universal health care and equal rights. Most of his presidency dealt with foreign affairs though related to WWII reconstruction and eventually McCarthyism spread and engulfed much of the domestic activities of the government.

I'd think both men would be encouraged by today's Democrats. Believe it or not, especially by Hillary Clinton.

Good question.

I cannot believe my ears!!! Is this America, or the old Soviet Union? They may indeed have imprisoned people for speaking out against the government during a war; but does that make it right? To imprison your very own citizens for exercising the first amendment right guaranteed them by their own constitution? You are part of the misguided sect that is what's wrong with this country. How would you like it if Hillary and Barrack Obama put YOU in prison for speaking out against them during an election year? Would that be something you would condone? FooL!!!

When FDR was pitching the Social Security bill, he said it should be replaced by, regulated but private retirement accounts.

I think the reason was because he knew that sleazy politicians from both parties would steal every penny they could get their hands on of a government run retirement account, which they did.

Truman would get a belly laugh over Democrats who, from one side of their mouth, call Bush the missing idiot of Crawford, and from the other, claim he tricked them into voting for an illegal and immoral war! He can't really be both people, can he?

Now that he's a lame duck, he is also being accused of bullying them into continuing to fund the war.

"The buck stops anywhere but here!" is the new Democrat motto.

LMAO!

Roosevelt would beam with pride and joy that the Nanny/Police State which he envisioned and set into motion was becoming a reality! Truman would not have the intellect to understand one way or another.

It is an extreme mistake to try to decide the future based on yesterdays circumstances.
What would President Washington have thought about Harry Truman?
Pure nonsense to even ask.

Both FDR and Truman are digging their way out of their graves right now with the intent of dragging most of today's Democrat's out into the sunlight to watch them burst into flames.

The Republicans are even worse.

they would be in camps or prisons..for speaking out against the Gov't...during a war..just like FDR and Truman did to citizens who were opposed and seen as a threat

what's funny is during Eisenhower..Sen McCarthy was seen as such a tyrant about freedoms and civil liberties..just as Bush is depicted now..because of the Patriot Act that Democrats as well as Repubs ...both opposed and voted for

but when a Dem is in office they are hear no evil..see no evil ..speak no evil

FDR and Truman would love them, FDR loved controlling the media. The only difference is that the media is being anti-war this time and are lying and hiding things that just makes your blood boil and know that we need to stay there.

FDR would be appalled at what he started has morphed into and Truman would shake his head in shame.
