i would think you have an engine mount gone - this is a classic sign of one being split

its got nothing to do with the engine mount,if it had then other gears would also be affected, the syncromesh is going, clutch twice and ease it in slowly, the system for synchronising the teeth on the cogs in the gearbox is wearing out and early symptons are first gear stiffness as it is the most used, try not to crunch the gearbox as this will be more damaging in the long term........ pj dont know what hes talking about, reverse is totally separate, you can have reverse gear go and still retain forward gears and the clutch answer is wrong because you would experience that in other gears through the rev range.. .anymore misleaders or wannabees fire away
him under me has got it right, recon box is the cheapest alternative......

The clutch isn't freeing properly. Look at the release mechanism for lost movement, or possibly on a 9 year old car the dust from the clutch wear is preventing the plate from moving freely on the splines, or possibly the plate is warped

This is a symptom of a worn syncromesh gear. Gearbox strip down to repair it I am afraid.

Its the Syncromesh on the gearbox or maybe the clutch is on its way out or out of adjustment?

its not the sync because you would have the same problem with
reverse.its either simple adjustment or a worn bush. the bush is on the rod just before it connects to the g/box
