Nolan wasn't banned, so much as he was blacklisted.
Despite assertions by Nolan, he was considered/interviewed by several teams in several leagues (ncluding the NHL) during your so-called 'banishment', but none of these teams felt he was a great fit for their teams for whatever reason.
I don't think his ethnicity had anything to do with it. He's left a trail of bad blood as long as Bill Clinton's lying nose just about everywhere he's been.
- he tends to have a lot to say
- his love triangle with Dominik Hasek
- his love affair with John Muckler
- his subsequent love affair with Darcy Regier (who only offered a 1 yr contract)
- some people can't get past the negatives

Short answer -- Ted got a reputation as something of a difficult coach during his time in Buffalo, especially in regard to his relationship with management. That's not a good idea in the old-boys network. Nolan did get a couple of offers, but turned them down. It took someone with a little guts to hire him, and the Islanders qualified.

It takes time to forget. Forget what?
Forget the disagreements that took place that not only got Nolan fired, but got the GM fired as well.
What GM is going to take a chance and hire someone who got his last GM fired?

All the oil will be gone in 20 to 25 years . Without oil there are no tractors or trains . Without tractors and trains there is no food . With no food to buy what will you eat ? Global warming is serious but our energy crisis is more alarming .

I've heard he liked the sauce too much, told Muckler to take a flying leap and got a bad rap where it took him 10 years to shake off his critics

No, wait, I'm thinking of the pitcher!! DUH!!! What the hell was in that nog last night...? lol
Was he banned? I thought it was more of a social exile into the minors before he made his comeback. Curse of the Jack Adams, I guess.
