Use "mathematical constants" (eg. "x", "y", etc.) to simplify the problem.
The first statement of the first problem indicates:
x = 42, were "x" is the cost of a double pack video (double and triple pack are "extra information, irrelevant)
The second statement of the second problem indicates:
x +6 = (2/3)*y , were "y" is the cost of a triple pack

Why add 6, to create a equality.

Solve for "y"

42 + 6 = (2/3)*y
y = 72

Use the same method to solve the second problem

Hey you asked two questions!
Let x =the cost of of the triple pack of video games
I see no reason to decare another variable
42=6+2x/3

that is all you asked for but here is more
36=2x/3
x=$54

Let x= Maria's height at birth
240=-3+3x

again this is all they asked for but here is more
243=3x
x=81 cm around 32 inches really tall for a baby!

Allow the equation 240 = 3h - 3 to represent the mathematical relationship presented, where 'h' is Maria's height at birth. Solve for the variable 'h' by adding the integer '3' to both sides of the equation:

243 = 3h

Divide both sides of this resultant equation by the integer '3' and the result is 81.

Thus, Maria's height at birth was 81 centimeters.

Twin Pack______Triple Pack
$ 42_____________$ x

(2/3)x - 6 = 42
(2/3) x = 48
2x = 144
x = 72

Triple pack cost is $ 72

Height (cm)______Birth Height (cm)
240________________h

240 = 3h - 3
3h = 243
h = 81

Birth height = 81 cm
