What are the doctors looking for with this biopsy test? If no viruses were found? I'm a 35year old mom who is extremely worried, but my Doctor said not to? Can anyone give some info on this subject? THANKS!!!

Most likely cause of atypical pap is precancerous cells due to HPV. But, as was said by others, there are many causes of weird cells. They want to make sure you're not headed for cervical cancer. I know more women who need colposcopies after paps than women who get normal paps. Guess I'm lucky. Or careful. Or both.

this is not uncommon. an abnormal pap just means the cells on a slide appear abnormal. this can be caused from a wide range of ailments from a yeast infection, to a recent but resolved infection, to hpv, to cancer. the colposcopy will allow the doctor to get a closer look at your cervix and if needed they will take a biopsy. (burns a little and feels like bad cramps). in most cases your biopsy will come back normal, then you will have to get a re-pap in 6 months to make sure the cells have returned to normal.

You can look it up on line. I keyed in your spelling of the word and it came up also with another spelling colposcopy. Both seem to say about the same thing. Cervical exam usually for small bumpy cauliflower looking warts that are usually painless that are around the genitals.

They are going to be checking to make sure that the cells that are on your cervix are not showing signs of possibly becoming cancer.

Let your doctor know that you would like to talk to him some more because you have additional questions because you are really concerned about having this procedure done.
